SEO or web design: Which comes first?

by Esther Tyreman / Website Design

There are two main factors that need to be considered when building an effective business website – traffic and web design. Traffic is paramount to the success of a business, without it and your business will likely stagnate.

It doesn’t matter how you choose to drive traffic, be it building an email list, converting sales or by the design of your site, you should aim to drive as much traffic as possible to your site and convert as much as you can. If your activities don’t result in any of this, then your actions need to be adjusted.

There is a common debate about which is more important; your site’s design or it’s SEO functionality. Which one should you focus on, and can you have both. A solid SEO functionality and a well-designed site, or do you have to choose?

A well-designed site will give your customers the confidence to use your product or service. A business that cares about their site’s design probably cares about how they serve their customers. A stylish website should understand the customer journey and so they should be lead on a natural progression through the site towards making a sale. However, SEO can be put on the back burner when designing an aesthetically pleasing site. Coding can be complicated and disorganised from the point of view of a search engine’s spider.

This can have an impact on your rankings and reduce traffic, so you have a beautifully designed site with no one to see it, however on the other side of the argument, writing code that can easily be crawled, indexed and understood by a search engine spider means that you rank for the right keywords and bring in your target audience. However, if the design of the site has been neglected then your customer will not be easily led towards a sale.

The key is to find a balance between an SEO optimised site that brings in specifically, targeted traffic and a well-designed, aesthetically pleasing site that is optimised for conversions.

If there had to be a choice between SEO and design, then SEO should be the choice. It is better to start with a site that attracts visitors because of its content and build a design around that. It can be difficult to slim down tough, difficult code that may be behind a stylish design. With an SEO optimised site, you can monitor the traffic and analyse the data and make improvements to the design of your site based on what you find.
