Modernise your SEO strategy

by Esther Tyreman / Website Design

A company website requires constant monitoring and updating. You cannot expect your website to remain the same for months or years on end and still be effective. Best practices evolve, what works a few years ago will have little relevance today, the same can be said for your SEO strategy. Search engines are constantly changing their ranking factors and algorithms. Unfortunately, we speak with clients that are still expecting their outdated techniques to attract a lot of high-quality, relevant traffic.

Keywords have always played a big part in ranking highly, but new search algorithms are placing more emphasis on relevant and useful content. The use of keywords has now become abused, with marketers cramming their content full of keywords in the attempt to rank highly while creating content that read poorly and made little to no sense. When creating your content, don’t focus too much on popular keywords but instead focus on sharing expert knowledge.

Link building is still a vital part of your ranking success. However, previous strategies included paying for backlinks, but this is no longer effective. We can’t say it enough; it’s all about relevance. Take the time to acquire high-quality, relevant links rather than any old source. SEO algorithms don’t allow you to cut corners and cheat your way to the top anymore. This leads us on to our next point, are you issuing press releases every day/week? Stop it. You should only be writing a press release when you have something newsworthy to say. Issuing pointless releases just for the sake of acquiring links is no longer going to work.

New algorithms now place much more importance on mobile users. With the majority of people now using a mobile device to search and make a purchase, if your website is not mobile friendly then you will take a hit in the rankings. You are now expected to understand your customers and add value to their experience, no matter what device they are using.

At Bitlab, we take the time to learn about new algorithms and the main factors that lead to higher ranking positions on search engines. When you’re running a business, it is difficult to stay on top of all tasks and typically, your website and updates get forgotten about. Your website content and its design need to be tailored to your customers’ needs, and their requirements are constantly changing. These tips are just the starting point; there isn’t just one strategy that will suit every business, focus on your customers and your business.
