Local backlinks – are they worth it?

Many people believe that local backlinks are difficult to get and a waste of time, you should spend your time chasing down the huge, more authoritative links. However, local backlinks can help you to build relevance within your locality. The difficulty with local backlinks is how to go about securing them.

The best place to start is with citations, if you are already cited on some websites then check these listings and make sure that everything is correct. Citations are a great way to get started with backlinks, they offer you the ability to place your basic business information (Name, Address, Phone Number) on a reputable site along with a link to your website or an article that you have written.

You don’t have to look too far to find an opportunity to secure backlinks, however, you do need to be smart about it. Link opportunities are limited (as you’re only looking in your local area) and chances are, the sites you link with will be of a lower authority than the larger businesses. Look at local newspapers or media outlets and see if they have any opportunities. Some may even do features on your type of industry. Speak with local bloggers, they may have a small following but the majority will be local people. If you have some spare time (although we know that it’s unlikely!) then consider doing some volunteering, this will bring some positive publicity to your business. If you don’t have time to volunteer then you may consider sponsoring a local charity or society.

As with most aspects of your business, it is important to understand what your competitors are doing and where your business stands within its industry, and linkbuilding is no different. You need to take some time to think about the search terms that bring the most value to your business. Find out which businesses are ranking for these terms, they will be your direct competitors. There are certain applications that can help you to analyse the backlinks to a website, analyse these websites and compare their backlinks with yours. Go after the backlinks that you don’t have but your competitor does, this will put you on a level playing field with your competitors. Once you’re more or less equal, it’s time to get ahead, take a look outside of your industry and see where other local companies have gained their backlinks, this may give you some ideas that you may not have thought of.
